Welcome to our Fine Arts Department at Dobson Academy!

We believe that the Arts is a crucial element in providing a comprehensive education to our students. It is our goal to bring both the musical and non-musical benefits of music study alive in the classroom and a Discipline Based Art Education (commonly called DBAE) which goes beyond painting a pretty picture.

MUSIC EDUCATION - Mrs. Cunningham
Music teaches discipline, concentration, cooperation, being "part of a team," and helps to develop higher order thinking skills, as well as many other characteristics that we want to instill in our students.
But music is also worth studying for its own aesthetic values. Just think of the power that music can have over the human spirit: to calm or energize, to comfort or anger, to celebrate or mourn.
It is my goal to teach students to become good musicians, but also to help them understand why and how music is and has been so important to our existence as a human culture.

ART EDUCATION - Mrs. Wilson
DBAE promotes higher level thinking skills, original problem solving skills, cultural and global awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication, and other skills that will help students throughout their lives. These goals are accomplished by teaching art history, criticism and aesthetics as well as production.
It also serves as an innovative but fundamental approach to integrating the arts into the curriculum which will permit students at all levels, in any course of study, to be introduced to, understand and participate in, an art form within the structure of a typical school day.
I hope to share my love of art with my students and broaden their understanding of the arts.

We invite you to visit our site frequently and feel free to contact us at anytime. Our door is always open to students and parents alike.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Cunningham & Mrs. Wilson
