The First Grade music curriculum is designed to further introduce the young child to music.
The main goal of this curriculum is to further expose the students to such basic concepts as rhythm, melody, harmony, tone color, vocal techniques, form and music appreciation.
Each student will be able to show competency and proficiency in each area.  The students will also use these skills in preparation and presentation of two music programs.

RHYTHM
1. Identify, express through bodily movement, and maintain a steady beat.
2. Distinguish between a steady beat and no steady beat.
3. Identify strong and weak beats.
4. Identify meter in 2.
5. Identify, express through bodily movement, and show contrast between long and short sounds.

MELODY
1. Distinguish between high and low sounds
2. Distinguish between upward and downward direction in a melody
3. Identify the shape of a melody
4. Identify intervals that step, leap, or repeat
5. Distinguish between same and different melody patterns
6. Identify repeatition in a melody
7. Identify like and unlike patterns
8. Identify melodic phrase lengths
9. Identify repeated phrases

HARMONY
1. Identify and distinguish between a accompanied and unaccompanied music.

TONE COLOR
1. Identify natural and mechanical sounds
2. Identify solo vocal and group vocal sounds
3. Identify sounds of various intstruments
4. Identify individual vocal sounds (male, female, and child)

FORM
1. Identify the introduction of a piece of music
2. Identify two different sections in music
3. Identify and perform verse and refrain
4. Identify and perform solo and chorus

MUSIC APPRECIATION
1. Interpret the expressive qualities of a song in terms of style and mood
2. Identify loud/soft, fats/slow, and various changes in dynamics and tempo as a way of defining the expression of
   a piece of music.

READING MUSIC
1. Identify a staff and define it as having lines and spaces
2. Identify the treble and bass clefs
3. Identify a quarter note and understand its time value
4. Identify an eighth note and understand its time value
5. Identify a half note and understand its time value
6. Recite the musical alphabet - ABCDEFG

VOCAL TECHNIQUE
1. Understand and show good singing posture
2. Understand and show a good light tone as opposed to a throaty chest tone
