The Kindergarten music curriculum is designed as an introduction for the young child to music.
The main goal of this curriculum at the Kindergarten level is to expose the students to such basic concepts as rhythm, melody, vocal technique, harmony, tone color, form and music appreciation.
Each student will be able to show competency and proficiency in each area.
RHYTHM
1. Identify, express through bodily movement, and maintain a steady beat.
2. Identify, express through bodily movement, and show contrast between long and short sounds.
3. Distinguish aurally and demonstrate the differences between rhythm patterns of long and short sounds and
even and uneven rhythm patterns.
4. Echo rhythm patterns using long and short sounds of one measure duration.
MELODY
1. Distinguish between high and low sounds.
2. Distinguish between upward and downward direction of a melody.
3. Distinguish between same and different melody patterns.
4. Identify and distinguish between like and unlike patterns.
HARMONY
1. Identify and distinguish between a accompanied and unaccompanied music.
TONE COLOR
1. Identify natural sounds
2. Identify mechanical sounds
3. Identify oral solo and vocal group sounds
4. Identify body percussion sounds, classroom percussion sounds, and other various intstruments
FORM
1. Identify and perform call and response
2. Identify the introduction of a song
3. Identify repeated sections in a piece of music
MUSIC APPRECIATION
1. Interpret the expressive qualities of a song in terms of style and mood
READING MUSIC
1. Identify a staff and define it as having lines and spaces
2. Identify the treble and bass clefs
3. Recite the musical alphabet - ABCDEFG
VOCAL TECHNIQUE
1. Understand and show good singing posture
2. Understand and show a good light tone as opposed to a throaty chest tone
